Dothan City Commissioner Stock Says No to Excessive Library Spending
Yesterdays Dothan City Commission meeting had some fireworks. One budget item up for vote was for almost a Million dollars for the Dothan Houston County Library. It’s my understanding that the county gives about $300K but Dothan gives the most. Ashford may also give a little, less than $50K but I’m not 100% certain.
It’s my understanding that a lot of residents and churches got upset a couple years ago and wanted some questionable books removed. D5 Commissioner Gnatt Pierce said there wasnt evidence the library wasn’t responding to the commissions concerns…guess he wasn’t paying attention when the two concerned local ladies spoke about the sexualy explicit children’s books that are still in the library’s collection. D4 Commissioner Dave Stock spoke out against using taxpayer dollars to support a non-profit that spends its money on sexual books that target kids, leaf blowers, and video games. He said he doesn’t think thats what they should be filling the library with, and he also said their payroll and benefits are now over a million dollars a year.
Every other commissioner and the mayor voted to fund the library, but Stock stood his ground and said he supports funding the library but not if it’s gonna use tax dollars to by inappropriate children’s books, lawn equipment and video games. He doesn’t think that’s the point of a library, especially when budgets are tight and the city is wanting to raise fees for everything.
I haven’t seen theee books myself, but something tells me we haven’t heard the end of this. Stock doesn’t seem to be one to back down and he’s clearly not afraid to stand up for what he thinks is right. Even if you disagree with him on this issue, it’s kinda nice not having a commission full of yes men who are too scared to speak up on anything.
