On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Geneva County 911 received a report that a large limb from a mature oak tree had fallen on an individual at a residence on East County Road 4 in the Fadette Community of Geneva County.

Slocomb EMS, the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, and an officer with the Dothan Police Department responded to the scene. The victim was identified as Melvin T. Dixon, 68.

According to the investigation, Mr. Dixon was walking through his yard with his young grandson when the large tree limb unexpectedly broke and fell, pinning him beneath it. A neighbor quickly retrieved a jack and used it to help lift the limb while family members pulled Mr. Dixon from underneath. Despite their immediate and courageous efforts, Mr. Dixon was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This tragic accident serves as a reminder of how quickly life can change. Family, friends, neighbors, and first responders were left shocked by the sudden and random nature of this heartbreaking incident.

The Geneva County Coroner’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who responded and did everything possible in an effort to save Mr. Dixon. While the outcome was not the one everyone hoped for, their swift actions and compassion were a testament to the strength of this community.
