Dothan: Today is National Coffee with a Cop Day, and the Dothan Police Department is taking part at Dakota Coffee, Westside Dothan.
Captain Rachel David, Dothan Police Department:
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our citizens to hang out with local police officers and get to know us. Oftentimes people have questions for law enforcement but may not want to approach us while we’re on scenes, knowing that we’re dealing with situations. So this gives us the opportunity to take a few hours out and spend time just having a conversation and getting to know one another. Coffee is on us today, so we’re providing anybody who comes with a cup of coffee.”
The event was free and was held nationwide, with communities across the country getting to know their police officers.
Chief Will Benny, Dothan PD:
How do you feel about this event today? It’s a national event, but locally, what does this mean to you?
“We’ve been doing this event for several years, and it’s a great way to connect with community members. It gives people a chance who maybe wouldn’t have a run-in with the police, or come to the police station for any certain event, to connect with police officers. This is also a wonderful opportunity for children. It’s a great environment for them to get introduced to the local police officers of our community. Through school events and things like this, we’re making sure kids know they can always trust police officers. It’s very important to us.”
