
LEE COUNTY: A 28-year-old Alabama mother is behind bars after deputies say she attempted to suffocate her 4-month-old baby during the early hours of Monday morning.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. to a home on Lee Road 212 after a frantic 911 call stated a woman was trying to smother her infant. Authorities arrived within minutes of the call.
Investigators say witnesses at the scene claimed the mother, identified as Mireire Johana Garcia Lucero, tried to smother the baby and also choked and shook the child in an effort to silence her crying.
The infant was rushed by ambulance to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. Deputies confirmed the baby was awake upon transport and appeared to be in stable condition.
Lucero was taken into custody and now faces charges of attempted murder and torture/willful abuse of a child. She remains in the Lee County Jail with bond set at $85,000.
