HOUSTON COUNTY:      According to informed sources, the members of Houston County Commission are working the local legislative delegation for a one cent sales tax increase for Houston County.

County Commission’s can not impose an additional sales tax without the issue coming from the Alabama Legislature. It is my understanding if the Alabama Legislature passes it a vote of the registered voters would not be required.

If the local legislative delegation and other members of the Alabama Legislature would approve electronic bingo in Houston County then a sales tax increase would not be needed. But they had rather rob from the citizen’s pockets.

As RSN also understands, Houston County is about $ 3 million in the red for this fiscal year and when the new budget passes in September RSN hears Houston County will be $ 10 million in the red. This has been Chairman Brandon Shoupe’s first term and the registered voters “inside” the City of Dothan re-elected Shoupe. The registered voters “in the county” did not re-elect Brandon Shoupe because he lost the county polling places, except Wicksburg – where he graduated from, Bay Springs – where he lives, Taylor and Rehobeth. The rest of the county did not vote Shoupe and he only won by 1,865 votes.

So, get ready for higher taxes and fees.
