Retired Houston County Sheriff, Lamar Glover, 83, of Dothan, Alabama, passed away on July 22, 2026, leaving behind a life marked by service, devotion, and quiet strength. He was born on September 10, 1942, in Pinckard, Alabama, where he spent his younger years and carried the values of hard work, faith, and family throughout his life. He will be remembered as an intelligent, courageous, and kind man whose presence brought comfort and steadiness to those around him.
Lamar was a Christian whose faith guided the way he lived, worked, and loved. He met the love of his life, Jeanette Green Glover, in Montgomery, Alabama while attending Cadet School for the Alabama State Troopers. After dating for six months, they were married on October 2, 1965, beginning a lifelong partnership built on devotion, respect, and shared purpose. Their marriage was a source of joy and strength, and together they built a family that remained the center of Lamar’s world.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Green Glover; his daughter, Michelle Glover Beasley (Lance); his grandchildren, Shelby Stephens (Ty), Jackie Beasley, Hailey Beasley, Justice Beasley, Nate Beasley, Ryan Beasley, Izzy Beasley, and Gabe Beasley; and his great-grandchild, Daylen Owens. He also leaves behind his brother, Harold Glover, along with several nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward Glover and Hilton Glover, and his sisters, Kathreen Clark and Dorothy Sego.
Lamar dedicated much of his life to public service and law enforcement. He served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1971, an experience that reflected his commitment to duty and country. After his military service, he continued to serve the people of Alabama as a State Trooper. His education continued as he advanced in his career, attending Wallace College and Troy State. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and later obtained his master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy, demonstrating both his determination and his lifelong belief in learning and self-improvement. During those years, he moved from Marion to Union Springs, then to Prattville, and finally returned to the Wiregrass area in 1970. He rose steadily through the ranks with the Alabama State Troopers and, after retiring in 1995, he ran for Houston County Sheriff.
Lamar was elected Houston County Sheriff in 1995 and served for 12 years until 2007. He carried out his responsibilities with integrity and a deep sense of duty to the citizens he served. Those who worked with him and knew him professionally respected his leadership, his discipline, and his ability to remain calm and thoughtful in difficult circumstances. His career reflected not only his dedication to public safety but also his desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Outside of his work, Lamar found great joy in the simple and lasting blessings of home and family. He loved his garden and his farm, and he especially enjoyed raising pigs with his family. He appreciated time spent outdoors and treasured going on vacation to the mountains. He also enjoyed listening to his daughter sing, a pleasure that brought him happiness and pride. Born in Pinckard and later returning to the Wiregrass area, he remained connected to the land and the community that shaped him. His life was one of steady purpose, and he was most content when surrounded by the people and places he loved.
Lamar Glover will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, faithful brother, and respected public servant. His life reflected intelligence, courage, and kindness in equal measure. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the family he loved, the community he served, and the many lives he touched along the way.
A funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Grandstaff officiating. The family will be receiving friends on Saturday from 9-11:00am at the church. Burial with honors will take place in Sunset Memorial Park following the service.
