Lawrence “Butch” Mathis

Lawrence “Butch” Mathis was born on February 15, 1957, in Buffalo, New York, to J.C. Mathis and Mary Mathis. His father, J.C. Mathis, preceded him in death.

Butch grew up in Buffalo, New York, and attended Dickinson High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, graduating in 1977.

On August 10, 1977, Butch married the love of his life, Marie Turner. Their marriage was blessed with two sons. They welcomed their first son, Lawrence A.R. Mathis, affectionately known as “Bud.” Three years later, they welcomed their second son, Mason Nehemiah Mathis, affectionately known as “Miah.”

Butch was Baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses June 15th, 1985. Butch had a genuine love for the ministry. He found joy in sharing the Bible’s message with others and helping people learn about Jehovah and His wonderful promises for the future. The ministry was more than an activity to him; it was an important part of his life and an expression of his love for Jehovah and his fellow man.

Butch also had the privilege of serving as an elder in the North Congregation for some 12 years. During that time, he devoted himself to caring for the spiritual needs of others, offering encouragement, and supporting the congregation.

Butch worked for General Electric in Dothan for 25 years as a Machinists.

Aside from his spiritual activities, Butch had a special love for helping the friends with their car’s cheering on his beloved Buffalo Bills, and he thoroughly enjoyed making music and took great pride as the drummer with the Tyson Road Band.

Whether someone needed assistance with a mechanical problem or simply a helping hand, Butch enjoyed putting his knowledge and abilities to good use. Helping others brought him genuine satisfaction, and his willingness to lend a hand was another way he demonstrated his kindness, generosity, and love for friends.

Beyond his spiritual responsibilities, Butch was a father, husband, and whose life was filled with experiences and memories that will remain precious to those who knew him.

Lawrence “Butch” Mathis is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Marie Turner Mathis; his two sons, Lawrence A.R. Mathis and Mason Nehemiah Mathis; his beloved mother, Mary Mathis; his older brother, Johnny Mathis; and his older sister, Mary Mathis Blackwell.

He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Sherrell “Cookie” Mathis, whom he held dear to his heart. He dearly loved his two Daughters-in-laws Tammy Hall Mathis and Hanna Shin Mathis.
