HENRY COUNTY: 3:42 PM Henry County Central 911 dispatched Henry County Sheriff Deputies and Abbeville Rescue to the 3600 block of Henry County Road 40. The reports were a man was accidentally shot.
The man that was accidetnally shot called 911 himself. It appears the bullet missed vital organs.
Henry County Sheriff Deputies and Abbeville Rescue responded. The man was on his land and was in the process of loading his ATV Mule/Gator. As he moved the gun it accidentally discharged.
The Henry County Sheriff Deputies arrived on the scene at 3:53 PM. The deputies did an immediate triage, applying pressure to the wound. The Deputies loaded the man in the back of the 4 wheel drive Ford F-150, with the second deputy staying the back seat with the gunshot victim and brought him out and turned over the Abbeville Rescue at 4:01 PM. The gunshot victim was about 1/2 mile off the roadway.
Abbeville Rescue called a trauma alert and transported to a Dothan Hospital emergency. The man is conscious, breathing and talking.
TWO THINGS: (1) ALWAYS carry your cell phone. They are not heavy and just getting out of the truck to open a gate, or walking out your driveway to get the newspaper, something could happen. If this man had not had his cell phone ON HIS PERSON and left laying in the truck, the outcome might be different. (2) This is a reason that departments, especially rural departments, have four wheel drive vehicles and it makes sense to have the pickup trucks. With the four doors the officers can still have a cage, the four wheel drive when need to go off road, they all need winches, and the rear bed can haul evidence or recovered items such as stolen bicycle.
GREAT JOB to the gunshot victim for the wisdom of having his cell phone on his person. GREAT JOB to Henry County Central 911 in obtaining the accurate information and responding the emergency units required. GREAT JOB to the responding Henry County Sheriff Deputies and quick actions to save life. GREAT JOB to Abbeville Fire – Rescue in the rapid response and emergency medical services provided. GREAT JOB to the staff of Southeast Health in the treatment of the firearm victim.
This was clearly a accident.
RSN loves when all cylinder hit as designed in emergency services from answering the phone through getting the patient to the hospital.
