Alice Ann Brown Todd, formerly of the Bertha community in Dale County, died late Sunday night, August 2, 2026, in Birmingham at the home of her daughter, leaving behind a long legacy of serving her Lord and Savior, caring for family, supporting her husband and the churches he pastored, and cooking her famous chicken casserole for family gatherings, church events and funerals. Alice was 93 years old.
Born in the Bertha community of Dale County on August 31, 1932, to Marion Floyd and Alice Enfinger Brown, she was the youngest of four children and outlived her parents after caring for them for the last seven years of their lives. She also outlived her siblings and their spouses, Glenn (Ruth) of Clanton, Randal (Clara) of Panama City, and Eunoka Brown Watson (Carl) of Dothan. Alice attended and graduated from schools in Echo and Dothan and later briefly attended Howard College (now Samford University).
Her large extended family played into a providential meeting one day in Brundidge, Alabama, when visiting her aunt and uncle, she met a young soldier home on temporary leave. William Max Todd was instantly smitten with the trim, fun, blond, and didn’t mind a bit when she “mistakenly” left her purse in his car after he volunteered to drive her home all the way from Brundidge to Bertha. They married eleven months later and were married for 73 years. His loving devotion to and care of her continued right up to her last moment on earth.
As a woman of deep faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to eternal kingdom purposes, she joyfully partnered with Max as he attended Howard College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, to complete his studies toward full-time ministry, and then as he pastored Southern Baptist churches in Tyrone, Kentucky; and Ozark, Hartford, Blountsville, Wilsonville, and across Dale County, Alabama. Alice taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served in local Woman’s Missionary Union organizations, drove friends anywhere they needed to go, and befriended and encouraged every member of the congregations they served.
Beyond Max, the love of Alice’s life and those to whom she gave her time and devotion were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After a stroke in 2017, Alice, along with Max, lived with their daughters Susan Todd Doyle (Sean) of Birmingham and Elizabeth (Beth) Ann Morris (Mike) of Huntsville. Alice’s grandchildren, Bailey Doyle Sherman (Alex) of Birmingham, and Whitney Morris Reed (Thomas), Benjamin Morris, and Anica Morris of Huntsville, always brought a smile to her face, but nothing like visits with her great-grandchildren, Shepherd and August Sherman of Birmingham and Anoria, Skylar and Saxon Reed of Huntsville. Alice was also especially close to and dearly loved her niece, Carla Watson West (Stan) of Dothan.
Returning to the church where she was a longtime member and in which she and Max were married, a graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 6, 2026, in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Bertha. The family will greet family and friends following the graveside service in the church fellowship hall.
The family is grateful to Cynthia Thomas of Birmingham, Alice’s long-time caregiver and friend, who helped her in the last years of her life.
Throughout her lifetime, Alice placed great value on supporting and encouraging those in ministry. To continue this support and in lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to the W. M. Todd Biblical Languages Scholarship Fund at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35229. This fund, which was established years ago by friends and members of a former church they served to honor Alice’s husband’s dedication to the study of biblical languages and her ministry alongside him, provides an annual scholarship to a student gifted in biblical languages toward the purchase of reference books.
