On January 10, 2019 at 4:30 p.m., Officers with the Marianna Police Department responded to a disturbance at a residence on Borden St. involving an intoxicated male. Upon arrival, Officers found Brett Crumpler sitting in a vehicle, slumped over the steering wheel. Attempts to awaken Crumpler were unsuccessful. Witnesses reported that Crumpler had been ingesting prescription narcotics. When a sternum rub on Crumpler was unsuccessful in waking him, Officers feared he may be suffering from an opioid overdose. Officers administered a dose of NARCAN and after a few minutes Crumpler became conscious. Due to his narcotic intoxicated state, Crumpler was arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed several Xanax and Adderall pills. Crumpler did not possess a prescription for either one. Additionally a small amount of methamphetamine was located along with a methamphetamine smoking pipe.
After receiving medical treatment at Jackson Hospital, Crumpler was transported to the Jackson County Correction Facility to await first appearance.
Due to the nationwide influx of opioid related deaths, all Officers with the Marianna Police Department have received training in administering NARCAN in an effort to save lives. This is the 3rd time in recent months that NARCAN has successfully been used by the Marianna Police Department to resuscitate a person suffering from an opioid overdose.
Chief Baggett urges the citizens of Marianna to report suspicious behavior and activities to the Marianna Police Department at 850-526-3125.
