Houston County Jail Inmate Dies

DOTHAN:     At about 11:40 PM Houston County Jail notified Dothan 911 that a inmate was not breathing. Dothan Fire Engines responded.

Dothan Fire and Pilcher Ambulance transported the patient to the Emergency Department of Southeast Alabama Medical Center. The inmate was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza called in the Alabama Department of Law Enforcement State Bureau of Investigation Unit. That is standard protocol when there is a death of inmate in custody.

The inmate has been identified as Martez Rashad Dozier, born in 1990.

Dozier was arrested and placed in the Houston County Jail by Dothan Police on July 30, 2015. The offense was Assault in the second degree. The assault was on a police officer.

On September 1, 2015 Dozier wrote a letter to the Clerk of the Court for discovery information in his case. Dozier was informed that there was no court date set at this time.

The case on Dozier was in the Grand Jury and he had not been indicted.

UNOFFICIAL information is that Dozier is reported to have hung himself.

An autopsy is expected to be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. That is also standard in cases where a person dies in law enforcement custody.

The Houston County Jail is under the command of Keith Reed.
