Birmingham firefighters battled a massive apartment blaze in the city’s popular Lakeview District early Thursday morning.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 12:40 a.m. to the complex - which is under construction - at 30th Street and Seventh Avenue South, said BFRS Capt. Harold Watson. Once on the scene, the complex was fully involved.

"It was like a volcano in the sense of all the ash raining down,’’ said onlooker Kenny Moon. "You could see the ash and the embers raining down when I pulled up. They were falling down and sparking as they hit the ground."

The building is a four-story apartment complex under construction. Watson said it was 80 percent complete but was still lacking windows and doors. No one yet lived in the complex, which is a second phase of the nearby Metropolitan development.
