GENEVA - DALE - HOUSTON COUNTY:
Geneva-Dale-Houston Counties: We have learned that the rural Internet service promised in 2018 ain’t gonna happen for most folks.
It was announced by State Senator Donnie Chesteen at a County Commission workshop recently that the underlying legislation was not properly written and it left out some essential wording. That wording allows only a very small area of the state to qualify for the grants to fund the service and leaves out Houston-Dale and Geneva Counties.
The senator who wrote the legislation in 2018 amended it to place all of the grant money in other areas. The change was not caught by the House of Representatives sponsor and passed.
The money earmarked for Rural Broadband is most likely gone for this year and now Senator Chesteen, remarked that there will need to be changes made to the legislation this year for our area to qualify.
Chesteen told the Geneva County Commission that he was working with other state agencies to try and find some money, but right now the High Speed Rural Internet promised by Chesteen is on hold.
