JANUARY 15 • PROJECT FLYING WILD, PROJECT GROWING UP WILD TRAINING WORKSHOPS Classroom and homeschool teachers are invited to participate. Professional development CEUs are available. Project Flying Wild focuses on using birds while approaching environmental education using language arts, social science and math and will be held from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Project Growing Up Wild builds on a child's sense of wonder about nature and will be held from 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Interpretive Center Auditorium. Registration and prepayment required. Register online at www.landmarkparkdothan.com. $20 for one session or $30 for both. 



JANUARY 17 • ROCKS ROCK! (PART 1) This program is for preregistered homeschool groups only. 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Our Earth has a story to tell and she tells it through rocks!  This introduction to geology program will introduce students to the rock cycle, the properties of different types of rocks, and the types of rocks found here in Alabama. $15 per child, $7.50 per adult or use your EdVenture Club Pass. JANUARY 19 • HUMMINGBIRD WORKSHOP 10 a.m. Interpretive Center Auditorium. Free with paid gate admission ($4 for adults, $3 for kids, free for park members). Licensed bird bander Fred Bassett will share his knowledge of this little bird with facts about nesting habits, food and feeders, and migration patterns. Registration required. Register online at www.landmarkparkdothan.com. 



 



JANUARY 24 • ROCKS ROCK! (Part 2) This program is for preregistered homeschool groups only. 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. In this class we will learn about how tectonic plates work, what makes volcanoes so violent and at times unpredictable, how crystals form, and why our earth is constantly changing and moving.  This class is a follow-up to Rocks Rock! Pt. 1, but can be taken independently for students with a strong background knowledge of geology and the rock cycle. $15 per child, $7.50 per adult or use your EdVenture Club Pass. JANUARY 26 • PURPLE MARTIN WORKSHOP 10 a.m. Interpretive Center Auditorium. Free with paid gate admission ($4 for adults, $3 for kids, free for park members). Dr. Gary Manfready will discuss migratory bird populations and the natural history of the species, plus housing requirements and conservation efforts.Registration required. Register online at www.landmarkparkdothan.com.



JANUARY 26 • SEED SWAP 1 p.m.-3 p.m. the Wiregrass Master Gardeners will host a Seed Swap in the Ag Building. Similar to a potluck dinner, gardeners are encouraged to bring samples of their favorite heirloom seeds to exchange with others. Admission is free with paid gate fee ($4 for adults, $3 for kids and free for members). A small portion of seeds distributed will be placed in our Seed Bank for future generations.



 



JANUARY 28 • ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DINNER 42nd annual dinner. Stokes Activity Barn. Meal prepared by The Blue Plate Restaurant. JANUARY 31 • AMAZING WEATHER This program is for preregistered homeschool groups only. 9 a.m. –  11 a.m. In this class we will learn about weather and how amazing it can be!  Mother Earth can creating some interesting weather, but do humans impact weather?  During this class, students will learn about different weather throughout the world and the impact humans can have on weather, as well as the impact weather can have on humans!  This class will wrap up will a showing of our planetarium movie Dynamic Earth in our full-dome planetarium. $15 per child, $7.50 per adult or use your EdVenture Club Pass. FEBRUARY 1 • ASTRONOMY NIGHT 6 p.m.-9 p.m. View several stars and planets as well as the Orion nebula through telescopes and binoculars on the gazebo lawn. Staff will help point out winter constellations and visitors can experience a starry hayride, campfire, night walks, refreshments and Planetarium shows. Meets several requirements for the Astronomy Badge. Bring your flashlights! $5 for members, $6 for scouts and leaders in uniform, $8 for nonmembers, free for children 5 and under.Space is limited and this program fills quickly.
