Betty Lane (Underwood) Smith

Betty Lane (Underwood) Smith, 97, a life-long resident of Houston County, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at her residence, following an extended illness.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Memory Hill Cemetery with Glover Funeral Home & Crematory of Dothan directing. Flowers will be accepted.

Betty was born February 25, 1929, in Houston County to the late Thomas Cody & Myrtle Vashti (Lane) Underwood. She spent the early years of her life in Southern area of Houston County and was a graduate of Dothan High School. Betty worked most of her life as homemaker, helping to raise her family, additionally she worked as a Service Clerk with Sears until her retirement. She deeply enjoyed spending time outside tending to her garden. Betty was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Daniel Smith, Sr.; her two brothers, Tommy Underwood and James Underwood.

She is survived by her four children; John Daniel Smith, Sr. (Kathy) of Graceville, FL, Nancy Mills (Gene) of Blakely, GA, Lisa Thorne of Auburn, and Thomas Neal Smith of Daphne; her six grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff of SouthernCare Hospice, especially Caylee Hughes, for the love and care shown to their loved one during this very difficult time.
