While Memorial Day serves as the unofficial start to summer, there’s a deeper meaning behind the barbecues and boat excursions; Memorial Day is about honoring soldiers who lost their lives fighting for their country.
After the Civil War, communities began holding gatherings to honor their war dead, decorating their graves.
Many localities from the North and South already celebrated the holiday in their own ways; in 1868, Grand Army of the Republic Gen. John A. Logan called for “Decoration Day” to be held every year nationally, expanding the memorial to all of the United States.
After World War 1, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of The United States’ wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.
Today, the holiday is marked by parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence. Flags are placed on graves at cemeteries nationwide, including Arlington National Cemetery, where each grave is adorned with an American flag.
While many enjoy the long weekend, Memorial Day remains a time of reflection — a day to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by so many in defense of the United States.
HEADLAND – HENRY COUNTY: Henry County School Supt. Lori Parker Beasley FIRED Coach Birdsong, the Headland High School Baseball Coach.
The termination happened without warning. Supt. Beasley would not look the coach in the eyes as she terminated his employment.
FYI – Supt. Beasley does not live in Henry County, as I understand. She lives in Dale County. Alabama Law does allow this because educators got it written for their benefit.
HEADLAND HIGH SCHOOL: “that great schools require involve parents, that we are in the business of building students one day at a time.”
The above statement is on the Headland High School web site. While the school might, Supt. Beasley and the Board is abusing staff and students. Some things they are doing are out of bounds and not in the best interest of the students or teacher. BEWARE!!!

Over the last several years I have received complaints and not looked into them. But some recent activity of bullying by the Superintendent of Education and Henry County School Board I will not allow. I am giving some days to correct their actions and if they do not then I will identify the bullying that is taking place.
To the coach, I am sorry that your living has been jerked out from you without warning. Maybe the Superintendent with stop being a bully and look you into the eyes and tell you why. I think they want to make you a scapegoat on something so beware.
TO THE SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT .. congratulations. You have now gotten my attention and in my binoculars and I am watching your every move and will let the people know what is really going on. BULLIES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!
Alabamians can now contact emergency services by text, thanks to a feature called Text to 911 authorized by the Alabama 911 Board.
Originally designed for people with disabilities, the service is now available to everyone in the state.
It’s especially useful in situations where speaking isn’t possible — whether the caller is physically unable to talk or hear, or if a suspect is nearby.
While texting is a helpful option, calling 911 is still considered the most effective way to reach emergency responders.
To use Text to 911, simply put “911” in the recipient area of your text message and provide the location and nature of your emergency in the body of the text.
Continue to only utilize 911 services in emergencies.
