AL/TN-2012-01AL-DOTHAN, Jan. 2012BIRMINGHAM - The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for many taxpayers in Alabama and across the country during the tax filing season.The VITA Program offers free tax help to those whose household income is $50,000 or less, while the TCE Program generally provides free tax help to people age 60 and older.Through these programs, community volunteers who are trained and certified by the IRS help eligible tax filers claim special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. There are eleven VITA and TCE sites in the Wiregrass. They are generally located at community centers, libraries, churches and other convenient locations. In addition to free federal and state income tax return preparation, most sites offer free electronic filing. Some sites work by appointment.To locate the closest VITA or TCE site, contact Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-888-421-1266.
