Autism affects 1 in 88 children in the United States and 1 in 54 boys. Chances are you know someone or you have a family member who is on the Autism Spectrum. The National Listening Scholarship Foundation (NLSF) is a nonprofit organization which assists low income individuals and families afflicted with listening and learning difficulties such as Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD and Dyslexia for approved auditory training and behavioral therapy programs. NLSF provides scholarships for these programs to children and adults in the Wiregrass as well as nationally. Locally, we partner with The Progress Center to provide behavioral therapy and sound listening training. In most cases, insurance does not cover needed behavioral therapy or sound listening training, making it necessary for families to pay out-of-pocket. Children of all ranges on the Autism Spectrum potentially need as much as 40 hours of behavioral therapy in a week; however, most children receive only 2-10 hours per week. Behavior therapy can cost a single family up to $60,000.00 per year. Low income families often cut back on the therapy because of the cost which, in turn, adversely affects the child’s behavior making it harder for the child to reach their full potential. How can you get involved? You can help us by referring families who may need our services to our website www.listeningfoundation.org. You can help educate our community by forwarding this to your family and friends. You may donate either online or by mailing to: National Listening Scholarship Foundation, 215 Midland St., Ashford, AL 36312. Your contributions helps provide training which potentially assists children with dyslexia to read, Autism to speak, or ADD/ADHD to excel academically.
