(Dothan, Ala.) June 7, 2013 – Reach Out and Read-Alabama pediatric practices and clinics are ready to Read Together and Be Prepared this summer with Norman Birdwell’s Clifford and The Big Storm. Reach Out and Read- Alabama launches its fourth-annual summer campaign, targeted at encouraging families to read together, and in lieu of recent weather disasters, we hope families will use the book as inspiration, encouraging them to prepare for disasters. Copies of the book will be distributed by pediatric healthcare providers statewide who will also be talking to parents about improving resiliency and preparedness in their families, with their children and in their communities.
Clifford and The Big Storm activities and events sponsored by Southeastern Pediatrics and Associates are being held at their new second location on the campus of SAMC in Dothan at 1806 Fairview Avenue, from 10:00am to 11:00am. Activities will include local meteorologists’, fire/rescue, and the Red Cross along with hands on ways to remind the youngsters, safety must always come first.
As in past years, Book-A-Million stores throughout the state will be collecting books during the summer campaign to be distributed through the Reach Out and Read program at the 70 Reach Out and ReadAlabama practices and clinics.
“Using the message of this year’s book will help families understand the importance of preparedness in disasters as well as help young children cope more effectively once a disaster occurs. Having the support of partners like Books-A-Million, Inc. and the resources of Ready Baby, a targeted outreach campaign to pregnant women and families with small children teaching the importance of preparedness for family
resiliency broadens the reach of our message,” said Polly McClure, statewide coordinator for Reach Out and Read-Alabama.
The Read Together and Be Prepared initiative could not have launched at a more critical time.
“Because we address the mental health needs of our patients, providing parents with tools to help their children cope during and after a disaster is part of that process. Using a book with themes and providing some guidance of how to use the book in these discussions can provide new opportunities to help families be prepared and address these issues. In addition, families are continuing to share books
together during the summer,” said Dr. Lauren Morris, medical coordinator of Southeastern Pediatric Associates.
