Two drifters, George and Lennie, have dreams of a simple life living off the “fat of the land.” They have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man with brute strength. George is cautious about who the gentle giant associates with because his obsessions with things soft and cuddly have gotten them into trouble. He promises Lennie can “tend to the rabbits” on their future land keeping Lennie calm, amidst distractions. But when a ranch boss’ lonely wife is found dead in the barn, the obvious conclusion is one that pits George against his own conscience. Of Mice and Men is a play adapted from John Steinbeck’s 1937 novel of the same name.
With themes of social exclusion based on race, disability and gender, Of Mice and Men stays true to the original novel (1937), exposing the depths of the characters and inviting conversations around difficult topics set against the brutality of the time. The play contains sensitive content including topics that cover racism, ableism, sexism, violence, assault, murder, death, plus some strong and offensive language. SEACT Board President Les Moreland says, "This classic story has a powerful historical message performed by an extraordinary cast of talented actors. You will be reminded of how things were several decades ago as this play poignantly depicts past cultural norms concerning the weak, challenged and disadvantaged in our society. Much has changed for the good and stories from bygone eras help us know and appreciate many things that have changed for the better." The play is directed by J.E. Saliba.
