Tonight Wicksburg Fire and Rescue honored some of their “Hero’s”. The department held a dinner to honor two longtime members of the department that retired this year. Mrs. Wanda Andress also made a cake to honor the members with a helments on it displaying their call numbers and rank. Don Hartzog a long time Fire & Rescue member ( EMT / Driver) and once Fire Chief for Wicksburg and Billy Hutto fire member and Rescue driver retired this year mainly due to health reasons. These members and their spouses who have both been detrimental in helping with this department where honored with plaques and a great meal in their honor tonight. Don has been a member for 25 years and helped get the department off the ground and his wife Miriam helped the department for years as support personal. Billy was a member for about 15 years and his wife Gayle though not seen at the department much in person has cooked and baby sat for members to make runs for about 27 years. These members will be very missed by the department but I am sure if needed will be willing to help if the need arises.
The last member, Mrs. Geraldine McNeil, was recognized as a very loved member who passed away a few years ago. Mrs. Geraldine was a very loved and cherished member for about 35 years and honorary department mom. Even 2 years after her death tears from the department could not be held back as the plaque was presented to family then was placed on the wall in her honor. Mrs. Mcneil and her beloved husband were both members who helped get this department up and going and were active in every aspect of keeping it running for many many years. Mr. McNeil ‘s plaque was placed on the wall several years ago after he passed away. Mrs. Geraldine’s plaque was placed on the wall right next to her husbands and both will be missed and are members that can never be replaced in this department.
These members were willing for years to give all even their life to keep this community safe and to help others. Wicksburg Fire and Rescue have been very fortunate to have people in the community spend their time to get trained and help others. If you have never Volunteered for your community you cannot imagine how much time and effort goes into it, nor how much joy can come from helping a friend in need. Please thank your local fire and rescue for all they do, and thank their families for allowing them to be away from their family to help YOURS!
