Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 Receives Alabama Tourism Grant for BBQ Festival/Yard Party Fundraiser

Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 (WUW 2-1-1) was awarded a $5000 grant from the State of Alabama Tourism Department. This grant will support marketing costs for the Tri-State BBQ Festival and BBQ Bash Yard Party in which Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1, http://w211.cfsites.org, receives proceeds. All ticket sales for the BBQ Bash Yard Party will go straight to Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1. WUW 2-1-1 must rely on these type fundraisers to generate revenue to sustain their program. 2-1-1 maintains the Wiregrass region's only comprehensive health and human services databa se and makes navigating the complex maze of the social service system easier for those in need. 2-1-1 Call Specialists assess caller needs and li nk callers to appropriate resources that can empower and lead them to self-sufficiency. The Tri-State BBQ Festival is currently in its 7th year, and attracts professional competition BBQ teams from across the country. These professional teams compete for $10,000.00 cash, the 2012 Alabama State Championship ti tle and the winner is eligible for a draw to the Jack Daniels Invitational. The BBQ competition is sanctioned by the Florida BBQ Association, and used certified, trained judges to score the meats. In addition to the BBQ Bash yard party, the BBQ festival offers many opportunities to sample BBQ, cooking demonstrations, kids rides and games, music, entertainment and many family activities. There is also a large vendor area where spectators can shop for various BBQ-related products as well as arts and crafts not related to BBQ. Numerous sponsors are also on hand to offer samples of their products and many have giveaways to offer the crowds. The event is open to the public from 5-10 on Friday April 13, and from 10-10 on Saturday, April 14th. Information is available at www.TriStateBBQ.com
