Zeigler asks ALDOT to halt roadblock of major beach highway 331 Opp, Al – With summer beach traffic at high levels, the Alabama Department of Transportation has blocked a major beach route and says they will keep it blocked for two years. US Highway 331 north of Opp, Alabama has been blocked by ALDOT to replace a culvert, a large sewer pipe and the 331 bridge. Highway 331 is a major route for coastal beach traffic. Traffic is being diverted to U.S. Highways 84 and Alabama Highway 141. Now, State Auditor Jim Zeigler has filed a request with ALDOT to halt the roadblock and re-do the project without blocking Highway 331. Zeigler says ALDOT replaced a similar bridge in the same county, Covington County, without blocking the road by using the old bridge until the new one was ready. “If 331 simply must be blocked, do it at times other than during heavy summer beach traffic.
