Doris Butler Pittman, known lovingly as Doris, passed away on September 11, 2026, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 89.
She was born on July 23, 1937, in Dothan, Alabama, to Tom and Johnnie Butler. Doris attended Rehobeth High School and carried the values of hard work, kindness, and faith throughout her life.
Doris devoted many years of service to Dothan City Schools, where she retired as a bookkeeper. She was known for her dependability, care, and dedication to her work.
Doris was a member of Covenant Methodist Church and took part in the Faithful Fingers sewing group, where she found fellowship, purpose, and friendship. Her church family was an important part of her life, and she, in turn, was a blessing to those around her through her. Doris was known as a faith-filled and loving woman, and those qualities were evident in the way she lived, served, and cared for others.
Doris also enjoyed the simple things in life. She was an avid Braves fan and followed her team with enthusiasm. She enjoyed sewing and gardening, finding joy in working with her hands and spending time outdoors.
Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, William A. Pittman; her second husband, Bobby Newman; her parents, Tom and Johnnie Butler; her brother, Talmadge Butler; and her sisters, Ella Mae Dawsey and Mary Ethridge. Their memories remained a part of her life, and she carried the bonds of family with her always.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Pittman Wall; her grandson, William Pittman Wall (April); and her sisters, Betty Baxley of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Martha Walding of Midland City, Alabama, and Lonnell Matthews of Ozark, Alabama. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember her with love and gratitude. Her family was a source of great pride and joy to her, and she treasured the relationships she shared with them throughout her life.
Doris Butler Pittman will be remembered for her love for her family, and the kindness she showed to those around her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of Doris’s life will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 10am in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris’s memory to the Westgate Branch of the Dothan Houston County Library System, 535 Recreation Road, Dothan, Alabama 36303. Doris enjoyed reading and especially loved visiting the Westgate Branch, where she would often check out books and spend time enjoying one of her favorite pastimes. A contribution to the library would be a meaningful way to honor her memory and her love of reading.
