Could someone from the State Trooper Department explain to me why a State Trooper on HWY 431 South has to drive 80mph PLUS while turning his radar gun on and off at North bound traffic between the Abbeville and Headland area at 5:40 AM on this day 1/26/2012. It is a fully marked Dodge Charger. This is the third instance I have seen this same patrol car driving at incredible speeds (passing me in a flash while im doing 65mph) while turning his radar gun on and off (meaning he is activily looking for speeders). Yes I do have a radar detector. No, I was not speeding. Before everyone turns on me because I own a radar detector, I want to stress that they are not illegal here. However, law enforcement should not be running break neck speeds while trying to trap a speeder or for any other reason unless it is within his rights as a law enforcement officer and he has his emergency lights on. This same car actually turned around on a speeder and stopped them while doing this last year.

However, the cam idea makes me nervous because of these stories. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20110929/10325216136/guy-arrested-threatened-with-15-years-recording-traffic-stop-illinois.shtml FDC - Jan 29 2012 12: AM 14:53
I have a friend that is a retired Ala State Trooper. I have told him of this and he told me to report him. However, I have to have the tag number or the trooper car number. Well, I'm not about to try and run him down and find out. I'm thinking about installing one of them dash cams that records your speed, time, date and all video out the front window. The same kind the cops use. Wonder if that is legal. Ghostmedic32 - Jan 27 2012 12: AM 19:15
In response to your comment I have no answers for why this Trooper would be using such excessive speed in his attempt to "catch a speeding motorist". Secondly, regardless if he is a law enforcement officer, firefighter, first responder, paramedic, etc., he still has to use what is known as "Due Regard for Safety". If he isn't using due regard for safety of other motorist, then if he is involved in an accident as a result, HE can be held liable for any injuries sustained as a result. Google Michael Monteclavo and read the articles. He was a paramedic in Ohio who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for "failing to exercise due regard" while responding to a call and hit and killed a woman, and her unborn baby, and also seriously injured another child. NO ONE is exempt, regardless. RickBlaine - Jan 27 2012 12: AM 11:07
Call the State Trooper's Office and report it. Report it every time you see it. There may be rules (rarely followed) that supposedly prevent officers from high speed without lights and /or siren. If there are not any rules there should be.
