I would like to see an article on why the police in almost every town locally here do not enforce the handicap parking violators. Don't believe me go to any walmart and sit for 30 minutes and see for yourself. 8 out of 10 cars using these spaces have no handicap decal and most of the ones that do will be seen with people that could run the Olympic marathon. Another state had a news crew capturing this in another state i was once in and you should of seen the people hiding their faces. I sat for 45 minutes at the walmart in Ozark the other day and had to stay in the car because couldn't get a handicap space. I have a broken back along with a whole alphabet of illnesses so yes I we needed one. As i remained in the car while rest of family shopped while parked within distance of watching the handicap parking spots i watched carload after carload of healthy people using these spaces, some with the placard and some without. Cities always looking for ways to generate revenue so i can't understand why they are not taking the time to cruise these areas enforcing the handicap only law. They would be rich in just 1 day. Like i said before don't take my word for it. Take 30 minutes and see for yourself.
ps.....love your articles and how ricky stokes news is always up to date with the new.

What some of you fail to understand and it really is none of your business is that people cannot get handicapped placards or tags without prior authorization from a doctor. Not all handicaps are visible. I assure you if someone ever approaches me saying I am not, I will show you the scar that runs down my lower back and goes to the top of my butt from where I had surgery when I busted my back. There are days when I dont need to park really close and then there are days when my arthritis is so bad that it hurts to walk. My feet swell as soon as I put my shoes on every day and after being on my legs for 20 minutes or so they start hurting because of neurological damage. So dont judge anyone unless you are a doctor and know the individuals situation.

The other day at Sams Club there was one of those monster trucks that you practically have to have a step ladder to get into had a handicap placard hanging from his rear view mirror. Anyone that can get into and out of that type of truck doesn't need a handicap placard. They need a new truck. Yes, I've seen people get out of cars with the placard hanging from the rear-view mirror that were much too able to be considered handicapped. One at WalMart was dressed in a brown and beige uniform similar to the Houston County Sheriff's office uniform. She parked in a handicap space and then proceded into the store through the garden center.

I couldn't agree more and I see the abuse all the time. It's not just folks parking without handicap decals, it's folks abusing the permits. The abuse is obvious when you see two very young people who have the physical ability to get out and walk to the front door of the business with no sign of any physical problems doing so. Somebody who needs that space can't use it when they do so. We actually took one away from a family member who was abusing the permit of her deceased husband for her own convenience. Disgusting.

I agree with the need to police these parking places, but would not be so quick to judge someone. You cannot look at one's exterior appearance and know if they have a handicap. One could ask you, "If your back is broken, how do you drive or ride?" Or, if you have illnesses, doesn't that mean they heal?I say this because I have a disorder that creates a long list of disabilities for me, but I look normal on the outside, probably to people like you. If I stand for very long, I faint. The painted lines in the parking lot create disorientation and seizures. So, the farther I walk, the more chances I have to fall and hit my head on the asphalt. I have a placard, but instead I choose to make the long walk because I do not want to be judged by my normal looking outward appearance.

Not all disabilities are obvious. The handicapped space doesn't specify that you must have a "physical disability but merely be considered handicapped according to the law." Now I will agree that there are people who unlawfully use these spaces just because they are to lazy to walk 300'. Why not contact the City of Ozark and pose your question and concerns to them and seek answers from the authorities rather than complain online. My girlfriend uses a service dog and you wouldn't believe the comments people make when she is in stores. A Walmart employee or should I say FORMER employee made a comment I overheard about her "not looking like she needs a service dog." Needless to say he is no longer employed with Walmart. But I can sympathize with your concerns.
