Homer Ray Starling, a Midland City, Alabama, resident, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026, at his home. He was 87 years old.
Homer was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was defined by hard work, faith, resilience, and an unwavering love for his family and community. He worked every day of his life, right up until the last few months, never slowing down despite overcoming cancer, surviving a heart attack, and enduring two strokes. Even then, Homer refused to let anything stop him from doing what he loved—working, helping others, and providing for his family.
He previously served as plant manager at Red Fox Fertilizer and then at Homer and Janice’s Airport Lounge, which later became J’s Landing, where he proudly ran day-to-day operations alongside his wife. J’s Landing was more than a business; it reflected Homer’s servant’s heart and his love for people. Homer was known as a problem solver. His hands were rarely still, and his mind was always working on the next solution. He was widely known for his servant’s heart. Homer would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. Whether helping someone financially, loaning tools or equipment, or stepping in during a medical or financial crisis, he was always there. He often hosted cookouts and benefits to help community members in need, never seeking recognition—just doing what he felt was right.
In his later years, Homer became especially devoted to Sunday dinners, insisting that the whole family be together. He cherished time spent grilling out, sitting by the pool, or fellowshipping on the back porch with his children and grandchildren. Family meant everything to him. Homer loved and doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Pawpaw,” he never missed a chance to slip money into their pockets whenever they were around, always with a smile and a quiet sense of pride.
Above all else, Homer had a deep, unwavering devotion to his wife of 47 years, Janice A. Starling, whom he lovingly and affectionately called “my lovely wife Janice.” She was the love of his life, and he would move mountains to ensure her happiness, comfort, and peace. Whether through quiet acts of service, steadfast protection, or simply being by her side, Homer’s love for Janice was evident to all who knew them. Their marriage was a true partnership—rooted in loyalty, respect, and enduring love—and she remained the center of his world until his final days.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with his son, Reverend Brian Turner, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, William and Osie Lee Starling; two sisters, Doris Harp and Gladys Brown; and four brothers, Archie Starling, Royce Starling, A.R. Starling, and Billy Starling.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Janice A. Starling; daughters, Kathy Smith (Don) and Haley Reardon (Dave); sons, Homer Ray Starling Jr. (Joanne), Neal Starling (Julie), Brian Turner (Jaclyn), and Ashley Ray Starling (Jessica); 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irma Ready.
Homer’s legacy is one of grit, generosity, and love. He lived fully, worked tirelessly, and loved deeply. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered always.
