DOTHAN. . .Jimmy Wayne “Jim” Powell, a resident of Dothan, passed away early Sunday evening, August 16, 2026, in a Dothan hospital. He was 74.

Funeral services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 P. M. Thursday, August 20, 2026, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Taylor Rutland and Student Minister Will Landsberg officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the mortuary in Headland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Ark, 475 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301 or Wiregrass 2-1-1, 567 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301 or First Baptist Church of Dothan, 300 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.

Jim Powell was born in Colquitt, Georgia and was raised in Blakely, Georgia, son of the late William Carey Powell and Jessie Mae Widner Powell. He was a graduate of Miller County High School in Colquitt, Georgia. At an early age, Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard in the Abbeville unit. He retired, with the rank of Sergeant First Class, after thirty-two years of service, from the Army National Guard in Anniston, Alabama where he served on active duty. Jim received a degree in Business Administration from Faulker University. He was formerly employed as General Manager in radio broadcasting. Jim was an active member of First Baptist Church of Dothan where he served as a Deacon. He volunteered at The Ark and Wiregrass 2-1-1 and was an avid Auburn Football fan. Jim lived most of his adult lifetime in Dothan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, Paul Kirkland, a sister, Edith Ann Durham and nephews, Todd Durham and Richard Durham.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Julie Harpe Powell; sons, Mark Powell and Michael Powell, both of Iron City, GA; Matthew Powell (Roberta), Dothan; grandchildren, Ivy Powell, Landre Powell, Savannah Powell and Logan Powell; four great-grandchildren.; several nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Judy Tew Lurie, sisters-in-law, Wendy Blair, Tina Overstreet (Jimmy), and Heather Pierce (Clay).
