
JoAnne (Baxley) Smith
Mrs. JoAnne Baxley Smith, a resident of Fadette, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at her home.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 10:30am in the Glover Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dennis Singletary officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with Glover Funeral Home Directing. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith was born on December 16, 1937, in Geneva County, the daughter of Jim and Mildred Lassiter Baxley. She spent her early years of life growing up in Fadette, Alabama. She graduated from Fadette Junior High School and later Slocomb High School, Class of 1955. She attended Troy University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1959, and later a master’s degree in 1978. Mrs. Smith spent thirty-one dedicated years in her career as a teacher, she taught at Houston County Schools and Cottonwood High School. She was a member of the Houston County Education Association and served as Secretary, Treasurer, and President. She served as a delegate at the AEA convention and a Treasurer of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional organization for outstanding women educators. She was also a member of the Zeta Gamma Chapter of the Kappa Delata Pi, HCEA, AEA, and Nea. Mrs. Smith’s career was something she was proud of, but it didn’t compare to her family. Her husband was the love of her life, and her family was the joy of her life. She cherished the time spent with her family. Her grandchildren were so precious to her. She greatly enjoyed hosting and preparing special meals for her family. Her hobbies were collecting cookbooks and preparing new dishes. Mrs. Smith was a dedicated member of Cloverdale Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, church training teacher, VBS worker, building planning committee, nursery worker, choir member, hostess committee member, and M&M committee.
Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her parents; brother, James David Baxley; sister, Janie Spivey; nieces, Marcia Baxley and Amanda Adams; nephews, Kenny Barrentine and Donnie Bolin; mother and father-in-law, Ray and Eutha Smith.
Mrs. Smith’s love and memories will live on with her husband of sixty five years, Jimmy Earl Smith, Fadette; daughters, Leisa Pitchford (Glen) of Rehobeth, Sherryl Quast, Fadette; brothers-in-law, Ronald Smith of Wicksburg, Gary Smith (Judy) of Jacksons Gap, Don Spivey of Fadette; sister-in-law, Nancy Barrentine (Robert) of Taylor; grandchildren, JoAnna Pitchford, Whitney Barron (Samantha), Holli Fuller (Justin), Emily Strickland (Trapper Bell), Lindsey Wilson (Travis); great grandchildren, Cameron Turner, Logan McConnell, Julianna Fuller, Ivey Jo Barron, Jonah Fuller, Ever Wilson, Josie Fuller, Birdie Bell; several nieces and nephews.
