Laughter & Marriage Open SEACT’s Season in Company
DOTHAN, Ala. — Southeast Alabama Community Theatre (SEACT) announces that tickets for its season-opening production of Company go on sale Monday, August 31.
On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert (Bobby) contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his married friends — “those good and crazy people” — explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single man is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions.
Company premiered on Broadway in 1970 with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. The show actually began as a series of short plays about marriage. The main character, Bobby, is a composite of bachelors who appeared in the short versions. Company is widely credited as one of Broadway’s first “concept musicals” built around a theme and a series of vignettes. It is one of Sondheim’s most influential and frequently revived works.
