If you have been a smoker for a long time, you have probably tried to quit more than once. In fact, smokers sometimes quit seven or eight times before they are successful.Nicotine is very addictive. It is costly in terms of money and health. I have never met a smoker who encouraged anyone else to start smoking.If you are a smoker, there is free help to quit for you. The Alabama Department of Public Health offers a free telephone service or web site that provides free counseling and two weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy patches, if medically eligible and enrolled in counseling. The Alabama Tobacco Quitline – 1-800-Quit-Now – can be reached Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Leave a message if it is after hours. You can enroll for the free services at www.alabamaquitnow.com if you’d rather have online help to quit.Try something new for 2013.
