Steven W. Kirkland, Sr., (S.W./Steve) passed away at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 13, 2015, after an extended illness. He was 79 years old.Funeral services for Mr. Kirkland are planned for at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, May 16, 2015, from Bethel Baptist Church, with Reverend Steve Golden of Bethel Baptist and Reverend Bud Womack of Life Point Church officiating the Americus service. Reverend Scott Byrd will officiate the Slocomb service at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Slocomb, Alabama. Burial will follow in the Slocomb City Cemetery.The family will receive friends on Friday, May 15, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee Street. Visitation in Slocomb, Alabama, will be held 3:00 PM, one hour prior to service. Mr. Kirkland was born in Slocomb, Alabama, to the late Clarence E. Kirkland and Eula Knight Kirkland on November 2, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother, Clarence V. Kirkland of Pensacola, Florida.He graduated from Slocomb High School, where he lettered in football, ba seball, and basketball. He was an outstanding basketball pla yer. Prior to moving to Americus, he worked for Alabama Electric in Dothan, Alabama. He was a supervisor of electrical maintenance at Redmond Industries for approximately ten years. He built and installed equipment to produce molding for Blue Line Industries and Housing Supply in Americus. He was in charge of operations for both these companies. He also built and installed equipment for another plant in Eufaula, Alabama, and one in Texas. He then opened and operated K and K Fiberglass until his retirement. He worked part-time for Shiver Lumber Company until his health declined. He operated Steve’s Tool Repair until his death. Pallbearers for the Americus service will be Bill Wills, Pete Smith, Eddie Bryant, Johnny Womack, Johnny Shiver, and Doug Carreker. Pallbearers for the Slocomb service will be Dewayne Russell, Lamar Helms, David Kirkland, Bill Karwan, Bill Wills, and Doug Carreker. Steve was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He loved God, his family, his friends, and his cat, Susie. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, talking with friends, and watching Alabama football. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Sheffield Kirkland; one daughter, Sheila Ann Kirkland of Americus; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven W. Kirkland, Jr., and Wanda of Americus; one sister, Delena K. Russell of Slocomb, Alabama; one brother, William Q. Kirkland of Panama City, Florida; one step grandson; two step granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 846 Lane Store Road, Americus, Ga., and Life Point Church, 384 GA. Hwy 30 W. Americus, Ga.
