The world lost one of its kindest people on June 5, 2026, when Mary Edna Harper, age 80, of Ashford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Born on January 21, 1946, in Dothan, Alabama, she was the youngest child of Dr. Joseph and Irene Homola. Joseph was an immigrant from Czechoslovakia, while Irene was raised locally.

On November 14, 1964, she married the love of her life, Harold Harper. During their 61 years of marriage, they raised three children and were blessed with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Those who knew Mary will remember her generosity, her big heart, her devotion to family, and, of course, her famous pound cakes. You could often find her outside tending her garden, watching the birds, or spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Harold Harper; her children, Monica Hicks (Michael), Scott Harper (Mary Jo), and Summer Fritsche; her grandchildren, Dyllan Powell (Michelle), Kelly Kenny (Mike), Rhaegan Powell, Drew Fritsche, and Jacob Fritsche; her great-grandchildren, Tripp Kenny, Tyler Kenny, Hadley Powell, and Ashby Powell. Her brother, Dr. Samuel Homola and her sister, Betty Jean Hartzog; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joseph and Irene Homola, and her brother, Billy Joe Homola.

The family will receive visitors at the home of Harold and Mary Harper on Tuesday, June 9, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

In honor of Mary’s love of gardening, the family kindly requests outdoor plants in lieu of flowers.
