Mary Esther (Leon) Walsh

Mary Esther Leon Walsh, 68, of Dothan, passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Friday afternoon, August 22, 2025, after a hard-fought battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Glover Funeral Home with Brother Joe Bush officiating. The family will receive from 2:00 until 2:45 p.m., prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that contributions be made to the Wiregrass Humane Society or Joy’s Pet Haven in her memory, something that was near and dear to her heart.

Mary was born April 7, 1957, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Edward Mood & Carol “Kitty” Cummings Leon. Mary was a 1975 honor graduate of Rehobeth High School. She furthered her education at Troy State University, majoring in music education. She was a proud flautist and piccoloist in the Sound of the South Marching Band. Mary was band director at Rehobeth and Cottonwood High School. Later, Mary became a paralegal, going on to become a magistrate with the City of Dothan.

Throughout her life, Mary always loved the outdoors. She loved horses, with Lindy Wood, her precious paint horse being one of her best friends. She could be found at the barn, always taking care of her. Mary’s mother instilled a love for all animals, filling her life with many beloved fur babies. When she wasn’t riding her horse, she could be found in her signature clothing, a bandana, purple tank top with a pitchfork in her hand, tending to a big bonfire. Mary was gifted with a green thumb, becoming a master gardener. She always had the most beautiful yard, never tiring of watering, weeding, and whatever it took for everything to be pristine. As Mary’s illness progressed, she never stopped praying she would once again be in her garden.

In 2007, Mary met and married the love her life, Thomas Walsh. Together, they spent many hours watching New York Yankees games. Mary lovingly cared for Tom, which he then returned to her during her illness. Mary and Tom were devoted members of Greystone United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish her memories is her beloved husband, Thomas R. Walsh II; her sister and best friend, Kathi Leon Dasinger (Eddie); nephews and nieces, Mark Hanna (Mara) of Albuquerque, NM, Helen Hanna Hollister (Nic) of Milton, FL, Mary Leigh Jenkins of Milton, FL, Ann Marie McLin of Milton, FL, Joseph Leon “Lee” Dasinger (Dr. Sarah Firebaugh) of Broadway, VA, and Benjamin Elliot Dasinger of Punta Gorda, FL; Great nieces and nephews, Brandon McLin, Chris Jenkins, Savannah Jenkins, Grayson Lacock, Alyssa Hanna, Braelyn Elynna Dasinger, and Benjamin Elliot “Eli” Dasinger, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Teresa May (Jeff) of Montgomery, Donna Crescenzi (Frank) of Dothan; Doris O’Quinn (Daniel) of Crestview, FL, and Jennifer Stevens (Dwayne) of Ozark; and also her beloved fur babies, Koa & George.

Our family wishes to thank her beloved caregivers who loved Mary as much as we do: Robin Campbell, Sharon Harris, Marie Williams, and Heather Butler. We also want to thank Dr. William Hundley, Dr. Joshua Bentley, Dr. Chris Nance, and Southern Care Hospice for their loving care shown to Mary.
