Judith Mitchell, 87, of Slocomb, passed away on August 22, 2026, at Hartford Healthcare.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Judith was born on March 20, 1939, in Birmingham to the late Hiram and Ruth Leonard. She played the piano and organ for her church. Judith graduated from Troy University, where she earned her master’s degree in education. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Judith was preceded in death by her daughter, Julianne Steren Mitchell, and sister, Susan Martin.
She is survived by her son, James Austin Mitchell, Jr. (Deborah); grandchildren, James Anthony Mitchell (Courtney), Kalie Ray Stern, and Richard Edward Stern II; great-grandchild, Theadora Stern; and sister, Karen Houge.
Judith will be remembered for her love of music, education, family, and the many memories she created throughout her life.
