DOTHAN. . .Acton Crawford Howell, a resident of Dothan, died late Thursday afternoon, January 31, 2019, in a Dothan hospital. He was 92.
Graveside services will be held at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 5, 2019, in the Pinckard Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Allie Freeman officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 5, 2019 in the First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Dr. James B Sanders, III and Reverend Allie Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church “In Christ’s Name Ministry”, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan AL 36301.
Mr. Howell was born and reared in Midland City, son of the late Samuel Spurgeon Howell, Sr. and Irene Hawkins Howell. He was a 1944 graduate of Midland City High School. Mr. Howell served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Samford University and a Master’s Degree of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Howell furthered his graduate studies at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. He was retired from Lifeway Christian Resources in Nashville, where he served as National Sales Manager, after thirty-five years employment. In earlier years, Mr. Howell served as Minister of Education for the First Baptist Church of Montgomery and Minister of Education for Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama and as a Pastoral Intern at First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. Howell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan and the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. In earlier years, he was active as a member of the Lucy Hathaway Cornerstone Bible Study Prayer Group. Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his wives, Sarah Smith Howell and Gladys Pilcher Adams Howell, and two brothers, Samuel Spurgeon Howell, Jr. and Charles Stanley Howell.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Cynthia Howell Saunders (Gregg Schneider), Sarasota, Florida; sisters-in-law, Evelyn King and Sandra Windham (Sterling), all of Dothan; two grandchildren, Theo I. Howe and Rachel E. Saunders; nieces, Julie Fletcher (Mark) and Terri Alcorn (Scott).
