Mr. Albert Eugene (Bud) Shelley, MSgt, USAF, Retired, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. Visitation for Mr. Shelley will be held Sunday, February 20, from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Ward Wilson Funeral Home. Mr. Shelley was born September 3, 1929, in rural Henry County, Alabama to the late Albert and Kathleen Shelley. Mr. Shelley proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. His military service took him all over the world including tours in the Philippines, Taiwan, and numerous tours in Europe. Mr. Shelley was stationed in Germany during the Berlin Airlift and was instrumental in developing the first aircraft navigational aids. After retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Shelley went on to a long career with the Federal Aviation Administration retiring in 1989. Mr. Shelley is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marlys J. Shelley, whom he met while stationed in Crosby, North Dakota. Survivors include sons, Jeff Shelley (Tami) of Auburn; Brian Shelley (Nancy) of Dothan; Allen Shelley (Susan) of Birmingham; one daughter, Carla Gassett (John) of Lexington, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Shelley (Shea) of Auburn, David Shelley (Anna) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ben Shelley (Emily) of Indianapolis, Indiana, Anne Scott Gates (Tyler) of Dothan, Scott Shelley of Birmingham, Annabelle Butler (Cory) of Portland, Oregon, Hope Zabala (Daniel) of Lexington, Kentucky, Drake Gassett (Haven) of Lexington, Kentucky; six great grandchildren, Lela and Helen Shelley of Little Rock, Arkansas, Sam and Kate Shelley of Indianapolis, Indiana, Trip Shelley of Auburn and Lillian Butler of Portland, Oregon. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his longtime physician Dr. Calvin Reid and Encompass Hospice Care. They would also like to thank Linda Sheffield, Michelle, La Kisha and Tanya for their compassionate care.
