Alberta Rae Shaughnessy, 79, of 1106 Decatur St. Dothan, AL, passed away Monday, July 24,2023 following an extended illness.


Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:00 AM July 28, 2023, at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Doug Seale officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 Am Friday, July 28, 2023.Burial will follow in the Memory Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice.


Ms. Shaughnessy was born in Philadelphia, PA, May 13, 1944, and has lived in Dothan for 60 years, since 1963. Before moving to Dothan with her parents, she attended 12 years of Catholic school and graduated from Little Flowers Catholic High School, in 1962. She took four years of Latin and won a national Latin award. She also attended Penn State where she took a course in Advertising, before moving to Alabama.


After moving to Dothan, she was employed at General Telephone Company as a long-distance operator, until 1964 when she married and raised four children, three sons and one daughter. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother to her family and friends. To provide for her family at times she held down three jobs. She loved working with children and the public. Of her many jobs she was a waitress and opened a daycare in her home.


 She retired from Dothan City School System after 23 years working in Food Services, where she received employee of the year from Southside Elementary in 2000. She was also a member of VFW Women’s Auxiliary Post 3073 where she served as a chaplain in 1970. She was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church Sunday school class, The Encouragers. She worked in the Church daycare on Wednesday nights and Sunday nights for 10 years. She enjoyed helping others by taking them to the doctor, shopping center or going to lunch. She was a fan of Troy and Auburn football and supported her children in playing sports. She spent twenty-five years watching and supporting her kids at the ballpark, which helped make them into who they are today.


She is preceded in death by her Father, Auburn A. Mims, and mother, Rose Maire Loscalzo Mims of Dothan, AL.


She is survived by her children, Richard P. Shaughnessy, III, Troy, Al; Michael J. Shaughnessy, (Cindie Standridge Shaughnessy) Dothan, AL; Theresa Shaughnessy, Castleberry, Fl; and Leonard A. Shaughnessy( Lori B. Hugo Shaughnessy), Dothan, AL. Eight grandchildren; Brittany, Michael P, Jonathan, Brandon, Madison, Sara Beth, Joshua and Lillian. Four great grandchildren; Hunter, Bryson, Scarlett, Mary Grace and Paisley and step grandchildren: Jessica, David, Jamie, and Christie. A sister, Rosemarie Jacobs, Two nephews, Michael Sean (Brenna) Jacobs and David (Lee) Jacobs, Two Great nieces, Marissa, and Taylor, one Great Nephew, Cole.


Pallbearers: Richard, Michael, Leonard, David, Mil Tatom and Marvin Kelly.


Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Phillip Shaughnessy, Jonathan Meredith and Brandon Hanners.
