He was born in Barbour County, Al on September 26, 1926 and moved to Dothan as a child. He worked at the Greyhound Bus Station at night and attended school during the day. He graduated from Dothan High School in May of 1944 and joined the Merchant Marines. He sailed on Liberty and Victory ships during World War II. After the war, he worked for Solomon Chevrolet, Dothan Buick, and Hamac Volkswagen. He also had his own lot, Knight’s Auto Exchange. He and his wife Sarah ran The Family Hobby Center, and North Park Laundry Mat. During this time he became a Rural Carrier for the Post Office for 20 years. He never met a stranger and if you ever met him he always had something special in his pocket to show you whether it was the ring he made from a quarter while on board ship or the penny that was the size of silver dollar. This little man in coveralls always made you smile and had a story to share.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years and 2 months, Sarah Williams Knight, his parents Shelley Whigham Knight, and C.T. Knight and his older brother Joseph Jackson Knight.
He is survived by his son Merrill Knight (Edda) Atlanta, GA, his two daughters Deborah Knight, Montgomery, AL, Kathy Foster (John) of Dothan, AL.; three grandchildren Oliver Wolff, Lakewood, Colorado, Donnie Foster, Dothan, AL, Amy Dixon (Chris) of Dothan, AL, and one great-granddaughter Katie Croft, Dothan, AL.
We would like to give special thanks to Sue Golden his Care Giver who always went above and beyond to take care of our father. Special thanks to past Care Givers Carolyn Davis and Russell Conaway. A special thank you to Valerie Meister his Gentiva Hospice nurse who took care of him.
