ABBEVILLE. . .Angus Dowling “A. D.” Pope, Jr., a resident of Abbeville, died Friday morning, October 27, 2017, in the Dogwood Manor Assisted Living. He was 95.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, October 29, 2017, in the Abbeville Pioneer Cemetery with Reverend Randy Greene and John S. Riley officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mr. Pope was a lifelong resident of Abbeville, son of the late Angus Dowling Pope, Sr. and Byrdie Hawkins Pope. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. Mr. Pope was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church and was an avid golfer. He was retired as a Supervisor from Farmers Milling & Marketing Company. In earlier years, Mr. Pope co-owned and operated a peanut processing company in Abbeville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Jane Norton Pope, a sister, Hilda Young and two brothers, Thomas Cullen Pope and Bill Pope.
Surviving relatives include a son, Samuel Dowling Pope (Grace), Abbeville; three grandchildren, Stacey Pope Swords, Kris Jackson and Kevin Jackson (Donna) two great-grandchildren, Jaylynn Swords and Lilly Grace Swords; three nieces, Martha Jane Stuckey, Ann Johnson and Brenda Colzenger; a special friend, Vivia Peebles.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Johnny Lindsey, Dickie Clark, Charles Money, Ronnie Bush, Kevin Jackson, Dale Ezzell and Bobby Joe Espy.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Dogwood Manor Assisted Living and Dr. Bendinger for loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Pope during his illness.
