Artis Whitehead, 76, formerly of Cottonwood, AL, passed away Tuesday afternoon June 6, 2023 at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle nursing home facility.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, June 9, 2023 at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Vann Clack officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount of Olives Memorial Garden Cemetery in Cottonwood. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 PM Friday in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund.


Artis was born on April 20, 1947, in Cottonwood, Alabama. He was the 1965 senior class president of Cottonwood High School, and he was an all-conference football player in 1964 and 1965. He spent 20 years as a volunteer fireman for the town of Cottonwood and served on the city council for 14 years. Artis joined his father at the family-owned Whitehead Milling Company in Cottonwood, a business that he and his brother Will eventually owned and operated. Artis loved and cherished his job, employees, and customers that felt like family for over 45 years.


Artis had been an active member of Bethel Baptist Church where he previously served on foreign missions and outreach. He was a member of the Marvin Cook Sunday School class. Artis also served as a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Cottonwood. He was faithful to his God and to his family.


Artis was preceded in death by his parents, Crosher and Nola Whitehead and his brother, Will Whitehead.


Surviving relatives include his wife, Diane Whitehead; a son Nick Whitehead, Birmingham, AL; daughters Christie Junkin (Lance), Guin, AL; Shaylee Meadows (Randy), Cottonwood, AL; and Celena Morris (Robby), Dothan, AL; nine grandchildren: Hayden Junkin-Galbreath, Jordan Junkin, Hannah Meadows, Tucker Meadows, Molly Morris, Walker Junkin, Abbie Grace Junkin, Matthew Morris, and Laura Kate Meadows; and four great-grandchildren: Holden Junkin, Grayson Galbreath, Finlynd Galbreath, and Emmie Galbreath; two sisters: Myrl McCord of Cottonwood, AL and Qualeen Grace of St. Joseph, LA. Artis will be dearly missed by his family and friends.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Lance Junkin, Randy Meadows, Robby Morris, Jordan Junkin, Tucker Meadows, and Matthew Morris.
