Avis Anna Ward Byrd, age 76, of Darlington, Florida passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011 at her residence. She was born March 18, 1935 in Woodstock, New Brunswick Canada. She was a person who loved life, and enjoyed every opportunity to be with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, decorating, going to the beach, fishing, gardening, traveling, shopping, and most of all she loved doing for others and serving her Lord. She worked many years in the Health Care field at Wiregrass Nursing Home, and this was her most loved job until her retirement. She also had a special relationship with Buddy, her beloved dog, who brought her such comfort, and a sense of peace.
Avis is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Ward; parents, Melbourne and Vera Clark; one brother, Manzer; and one sister, Florence.
She is survived by her husband, Haldon Byrd and his children, Donnie Byrd and wife Shelly of Montgomery, AL and Lucinda Johnson and husband Michael of Huntsville, AL; Haldon’s grandchildren, Brandon Byrd, Kayla Byrd, Lucas, William, and Alexander; her children, Diane Ward Jackson and husband Ray of Freeport, FL and Sally Ward Helms of Millbrook, AL; her grandchildren, Morgan Jackson and Leah Helms; her great-grandchildren, Noah, Nathen, and Isabella; brothers, Arnold, Gerald, Preston, Perly, Reginald, Melbourne, Jr., and Norvil; one sister, Marjorie; special friends, Juanita Saunders and Joyce Bither; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 2, 2011 at Davis-Watkins Funeral Home, 1474 Highway 83 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433, beginning at 11 a.m. with Reverends Tommy Helms, James Chambers, and Harold McCormick officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Committal services will follow at Darlington United Methodist Church Cemetery.
