Avis Childree, a woman who lived a rich and full life, passed away on November 19, 2024, at the age of 97. Born in 1927, just a decade after women won the right to vote, Avis’ life spanned nearly a century of transformative change in both the United States and the world. Throughout her journey, she experienced the highs and lows of history, from the Great Depression to the rise of the digital age and was a witness to the vast changes in society, technology, and culture. Avis was raised in rural Coffee County, AL, where she learned the value of hard work from an early age. She was a member of Goodman Baptist Church since 1939.  She picked cotton, worked in a peanut mill, labored in a shirt factory, and later, spent time in a chicken plant. Through it all, she became known for her tenacity, resourcefulness, and a willingness to take on any task. Her work ethic was a testament to the struggles and resilience of her generation.

In 1947, Avis met the love of her life. After only two weeks of knowing him, she knew she had found the man she would marry. Their whirlwind romance led to a lasting union that produced two children, and together, they built a family grounded in love and perseverance. Avis’ life spanned 17 presidential terms, and she lived through some of the most pivotal moments in American history. She witnessed the introduction of moving pictures, the advent of automobiles, consumer air travel, radio broadcasts, and television. She marveled at the growth of space exploration, the proliferation of indoor plumbing, and the rapid rise of computing, the internet, and cell phones. As technology advanced, Avis embraced each change with a sense of wonder and adaptability. Avis’ legacy is one of strength, love, and resilience. She lived through the transition of America from an agricultural society to one driven by industry and technology. Her journey encapsulates the essence of adaptability, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the small joys of life. She loved playing dominoes, going to the senior center, traveling, and attending the community dances where she enjoyed square dancing.

vis is survived by her daughter, Margarett C. Nichols of Coffee Springs; daughter-in-law, Teresa Childree of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Charlotte Nichols-Brown (Tim) of Tallahassee, FL, Shannon G. Nichols (Heather) of Level Plains, AL and Bucky Childree of Fairhope, AL; great-grandchildren, James Nichols of Danbury, CT, Andrea Phillips (Noah) of Level Plains, AL, Madeline Brown of Tallahassee, FL, Matthew Nichols of Level Plains, AL, and Malorie Nichols of Level Plains, AL; sister, Mary Sue Gibson of Milton, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
