To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world” (Dr. Seuss). That is exactly what Becky Mitchell was to us. After a yearlong battle with Glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, Becky Lou Mitchell passed away in the care of her loving family on December 19, 2020, at the age of 62. Becky was born on November 13, 1959, in Beaufort, South Carolina, to her father Samuel E. Mitchell, Sr. and her mother, Peggy L. Carter, who predeceased her. Becky was born into a large family being the eldest of seven siblings, including four sisters and two brothers. After graduating from West Washington High School in Campbellsburg, Indiana, Becky relocated to Geneva, Alabama. She started her career at Van Heusen Factory in 1977 working for eighteen years before retiring. Becky then transitioned her career, dedicating twenty-five years to serving in the lunchroom with the Geneva City School system where she worked until her terminal diagnosis.
Even though Becky had no biological children, she claimed all the children at Mulkey Elementary as her own. One of the philosophies she lived by was, “A person is a person no matter how small” (Dr. Seuss). One way she showed she cared was by giving a valentine card to every student at the school, making sure to not leave anyone out. Becky’s personal favorite school event was Dr. Seuss week. To celebrate, she made hand-sewn gifts for every student, spent countless hours decorating the lunchroom, and dressed up, all to make the children smile. Becky made sure all the kids knew her smiling face was never too far away and was always around to help.
While not at work, Becky was a dedicated member of Trinity Church in Geneva, Alabama. For many years she was a Sunday School teacher for the pre-K and kindergarten age class. Every Sunday, the kids knew Becky would have a special home baked treat and a handmade craft waiting for them along with their lesson. Every summer, Becky helped cook for all the children who attended Vacation Bible School and assisted with the lunches for the youth during band camp week. Becky spent numerous hours sewing handmade dolls to contribute to the Liberian Ministries, and she even went on several mission trips herself to ensure the volunteers had prepared meals every day. In her spare time, Becky sewed quilts for some of the special people in her life. No matter what the situation held, Becky was dedicated to making all the people in her life feel loved because “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” (Dr. Seuss).
Becky will forever be remembered by her siblings, Wendy and Johnny Barrett of Virginia, Samuel Mitchell, Jr. of Geneva, Susan Owens of Headland, Marcy and Derek Milton of Geneva, Walter (Buddy) and Faith Mitchell of Enterprise; her nephews, Clayton Levi Mitchell, Jaiece Taylor; her nieces, Alyssa (her children: Jaiece, Jaleayah and Juuls) Taylor, Krysta and Ryan Davis, Amber (her daughter Emmalyn) King; and her other extended family and friends. Becky was predeceased by her parents, Samuel Mitchell, Sr. and Peggy Carter, and her sister, Laura Smith of Geneva.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, in the sanctuary at Trinity Church in Geneva, Alabama with Bro. Gene Hauser and Bro. Allen Marsh officiating. There will be a family visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. The family will begin to receive visitors at 1:00 p.m. and funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted, or a donation can be made in her name to Trinity Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva, Alabama directing.
