Bernice Vernette Odom Pybus was born April 1, 1925 and passed on November 1, 2013 at Chipola Nursing Pavilion in Marianna, Florida.

Bernice was the fifth of six children born to McDrayton “Mac” Odom and Mary Etta Bowen Odom.

Bernice moved to Headland in 1941. There she met and wed the love of her life, John Wade Pybus, Jr., deceased. She and John enjoyed 67 years of marriage until his passing, December 22, 2012.

Bernice started her working career as a cashier with Mr. Cratus Whiddon, Grocer on the square in Headland. She later worked at Headland Piggly Wiggly and Headland IGA.

Upon John’s retirement, they left their hometown of 45 years and moved to their farm outside of Cottonwood, living there for 20 years. As a couple, they became residents of Chipola Nursing Pavilion in October 2012. At the Pavilion, they welcomed and loved the entire staff into their hearts and new home.

Bernice was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cottonwood. She was always striving to lessen others sorrows whether by praying, witnessing, or blessing you with one of her delicious cream cheese pound cakes. She could always be found nurturing others.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 4, 2013 from 12 to 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with funeral services to follow at 1:00 PM. Officiating will be Reverend Donna Sue Roberts, her niece and Reverend Karl Hudson, pastor of Calvary. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery between Headland and Dothan.

Active pallbearers will be Boyd Childree, Charles Earl Exum, Lloyd Deal, Drayton Waller, and Joshua Jones.
