It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Johnny Gayther McNair, 74, of Enterprise formally of Boaz, AL, affectionately known as "Big John," who left us peacefully on September 18, 2024.

He was a beloved musician, a devoted friend, and a cherished member of his community. He graduated from Boaz High School in 1968 and then went on to serve in the US Air Force and US Army for 20 years. Born with a passion for music, John brought joy to countless lives as a trombone player in the University of Alabama Million Dollar Band and later as a member of the U.S. Army Band. His love for music was matched only by his enthusiasm for karaoke, where he could often be found sharing his favorite tunes with friends and family. After his military career he and his family settled in Boaz, AL then moved to Enterprise, AL where he stayed until his passing. An avid fisherman, John found solace in nature, casting lines and creating lasting memories by the water. He was a die-hard Alabama football fan, proudly supporting his team through every victory and defeat, and sharing that passion with those around him. John’s commitment to service extended beyond music and sports. As a proud Mason, Shiner, and member of the VFW and American Legion, he dedicated much of his life to assisting others and giving back to his community. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Ustus and Mae McNair, his brothers Mickey, Larry, and Bobby; and a niece Deborah Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife Sherry Bishop McNair of Enterprise, formally of Boaz, AL. His daughters Michelle (Tom Peavy) McNair of Auburn, AL and Amanda (Brandon) McVey of Mobile, AL. 1 grandson, Adian Wright of Mobile, AL. 1 sister, Vassie Henegar of Albertville, AL, a sister in law, Dean McNair of Albertville, AL; 2 nieces and a nephew. As well as a wide circle of friends who will miss his laughter, warmth, and exceptional spirit.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in both Enterprise and Albertville, where all are welcome to share stories and memories of this remarkable man who touched many lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children at 2900 Rocky Point Drive Tampa, Florida 33607 or Shepherd’s Cove Hospice 408 Martling Rd STE A-105, Albertville, AL 35951, reflecting John’s lifelong commitment to service and community. Rest in peace, Big John. Your music will play on in our hearts
