Flowers are being accepted or memorial donations may be made to Dothan First Church of the Nazarene in Billye Jean's honor.

Billye Jean Hardy, known affectionately as Billye Jean to all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her, was a beacon of light and love in the lives of many. Born on December 18, 1938, in Columbus, Georgia, she grew up embodying the warmth of the South into her very being. On October 11, 2024, after a brief illness, Billye Jean passed away peacefully in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by the love of her family and the memories of a life well-lived.

Billye Jean’s journey through life was marked by devotion and service to others. For over 20 years, she was a beloved bus driver for Dothan City Schools, a role through which she touched the hearts and shaped the mornings of countless children. Her commitment to her community extended beyond her work as she was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene for 48 years. Her faith was the cornerstone of her existence, guiding her actions and her unwavering kindness.

Her family was her pride and joy. Billye Jean was a cherished mother to her son, Larry Edwin Hardy, Jr., and her daughters, Amanda (Dirk) Young, Cynthia (Berkley) Shirah, and Shelly Hardy. She extended her maternal embrace to include her special adopted niece, Melanie (Eric) Boggs, and her grandchildren, Josh (Natalie) Baker, Zach (Allyson) Baker, Erika Young, Erin Young, Emily Shirah (Gus) Malcom, Isabelle Shirah (Crews) Adkison, Andrew Shirah, Ashley Hardy, Jessica Cook, and Josh Lyon, as well as her great-grandchildren, Blaze Baker, Emery Baker, Eli Baker, Eleanor Baker, Emerson Baker, and Everett Baker, and several nieces and nephews. Billye Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Larry Hardy, Sr., and now, they are reunited for eternity.

Billye Jean lived the personification of Christ, not only for her own family but for all who sought refuge. Her home was a sanctuary for many and always open to those in need. Her ability to make everyone feel loved and that they belonged was one of her most extraordinary gifts. Her zest for life, her indomitable spirit, and her open-mindedness inspired all who knew her to live more fully and love more openly. She was the queen of hospitality.

During her final moments her faith never wavered; in her own words she repeated “Please let me go”. When questioned where she was going, she responded “Heaven”! Billye Jean was secure in her destination and ready to go.

Billye Jean’s legacy is one of selflessness, friendliness, and boundless love. Her life was a masterclass in caring and nurturing, and she left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. As we reflect on Billye Jean’s life, we are reminded to live each day with the same fervor and generosity that she did. Her spirit continues to motivate us, and we are eternally grateful for the privilege of having been loved by such an extraordinary woman.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
