Bob G. Hughes of Dothan, Alabama passed away Monday, March 27, 2017 at his home. He was 85.


Funeral services will be held 2 pm on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the Westgate Church of Christ with Phillip Dampier officiating and Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at Sunset Memorial Park from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Graveside services will be held 2 pm on Friday, March 31 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions to the Westgate Church of Christ, Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association, American Cancer Association or to a charity of your choice.


Mr. Hughes was born August 7, 1931 to Lorene Howell Hughes and Howard H. Hughes of Madison, AL. He was a 1948 graduate of Madison High School, a 1952 graduate of Auburn University and received a graduate degree from LSU in 1964. Upon graduation from Auburn, he accepted employment from Southern Bell but was immediately called to active duty by the USAF. He served as a First Lieutenant with the Far East Air Force Command and the Japan Air Defense Force Command during the Korean War and received a commendation for superior performance of duties.


When the Korean War ended, he returned to employment to Southern Bell until he accepted employment with the First National Bank of Huntsville as executive vice-president and director. In June of 1977 Mr. Hughes accepted a position with the City National Bank of Dothan, later to become its President and Chief Executive Officer. He was member of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry and was invited and testified several times for the Senate in Washington, D.C.


In 1984 he was elected chairman of the board of directors and president of The Citizens National Bank, Valley, Alabama and continued in that position until retirement in 1996. Mr. Hughes was very active in community affairs, serving as director of the United Way, the YMCA, the Indian Creek Home for the Aged and was involved in the formation of the Arthritis Foundation of Alabama. He was a member of the National Rehabilitation Association and numerous business, professional and civic organizations. He was quite well known in North Alabama with the Bob G. Hughes Boulevard being named for him.


He was a director of the Tri-River Waterway Development Association and the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Development Association. Mr. Hughes served as a member of the Beautification Board of the City of Huntsville, a member of the Dothan-Houston County Chamber of Commerce and the National Peanut Festival. He was an active farmer in Madison County and was instrumental in the development of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. He was also president of the Madison County Cattlemen’s Association and later a member of the Dothan-Houston County Cattlemen’s Association.


Mr. Hughes was chairman of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Development Committee, a member of the president’s advisory board of Madison Academy and on the advisory board of Independent Colleges of Alabama, the Madison County Auburn Advisory Committee and the Troy State University Advisory Board. He was President of the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association, Director of Civil Defense of Madison, Alabama, a member of the Association of the United States Army, the United States Army Finance Association, the United States Army Ordinance Association and the United States Preparedness Association.


An American flag was flown on a KC130R combat mission into Afghanistan during the month of July 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Mountain Storm in his honor.


He was a member of the Westgate Church of Christ and attended church in his every residential location. He loved his family and was kind and thoughtful, tried to live the beliefs and values that he imparted to others and helped many people from all walks of life on numerous occasions in many different ways.


Mr. Hughes enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, hunting and coaching Little League Football (his teams won two City of Huntsville championships).


He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard H. Hughes and Lorene Howell; his first wife, Nancy L. Hughes.


He is survived by his present and devoted wife of 28 years, Judith C. Hughes; his son, Robert L. Hughes, II and his wife Kelly Hughes, their 2 children, Robert Lee Hughes, III and Elizabeth Ann Hughes, all of Athens, AL; his daughter, Mary S. Hughes of Opelika, AL; a brother, James G. Hughes and nephews, James G. Hughes, Jr. and William H.W. Hughes, all of Madison, AL; his stepson, Paul H. Braswell and his wife Susan Braswell and their three children; a stepdaughter, Lynn Sterling, her husband Scott and their four children of Thomasville, GA; a stepdaughter, Dina Davidson and her 3 children of Bristol, TN. He is also survived by a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert L. Hughes, II, Scott Sterling, Jeffery Sterling, Trey Hughes, Tom Reeves, Anthony Sieben, Ike Thurston, and Jack Braswell. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be George Wakefield, Mike Murphree, Monte Baugh, Doug Enfinger, Joe Clements, Wayne Pierce, George Colvin, and Col. Brad Lynn.


The family would like to thank all our friends, doctors, nurses, DCI-Dialysis and the Kindred Hospice Group for all the kindness, compassion and exceptional care during this time.
