Bobby Sirmon, a resident of Dothan, died unexpectedly Saturday night, August 14, 2021, at the age of 84.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Rev. Lynn S. Nesbitt officiating. A private burial for the family will follow with Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 1380 W. Main Street, Dothan, Alabama, 36301.
Coach Sirmon was born in Garland Alabama in Butler County on July 6, 1937, to Claude Willie and Pearle B. Sirmon and lived the early years of his life in Georgiana. He was a 1955 graduate of Georgiana High School, lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He attended the University of Alabama on a football scholarship where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He served in the Army National Guard and was called up during the Berlin Crisis.
Coach Sirmon began his coaching career as head coach of McKenzie High School in Covington County. He moved to Dothan in 1963 as a Physical Education teacher, assistant football coach, head baseball coach, and JV basketball coach at Dothan High School where he was later promoted to Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. After retiring from his coaching career, he served as the Principal of Selma Street Elementary school. He also attended Troy Dothan where he completed a Master’s degree and an EDS in administration and supervision.
Coach Sirmon served the Dothan City Board of Education as Personal Director, Coordinator of Federal Funds, and Director of Operations where he retired after thirty-seven and a half years of service. In 2017, Coach Sirmon was inducted into the Wiregrass Hall of Fame. He enjoyed golf and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served as an usher and was a member of the Pathfinders Sunday School Class.
He is predeceased by his parents.
Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Patricia Jackson Sirmon of Dothan; three children, Katharine Forrester (David), Laura Hatcher (Stan) and Charles Sirmon, all of Dothan; four grandchildren, D. R. Forrester (Katee), Kash Deaton (Ryan), Preston Hatcher and fiancé’ Sarah Fleming, Laura Beth Carbine (Caleb); four great grandchildren, Frannie Forrester, Mary Reeves Forrester, Jackson Ann Deaton and Zay Deaton
Pallbearers will be David Forrester, Stan Hatcher, D.R. Forrester, Preston Hatcher, Caleb Carbine and Chris Manasco.
