Bonnie Faye Grimes Merritt of Samson, AL passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was 78.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Samson with Rev. Sam Totten and Rev. Danny Branch officiating. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continue until service time.

Mrs. Merritt was born in Geneva County, AL on August 30, 1938 to the late Rufus and Annie Bell Kirkland Grimes. Mrs. Bonnie was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Her love for the Lord came first in her life followed by the love and dedication she had for her family. She retired from the US Postal service as a mail carrier. She was also the magistrate for the city of Samson with over 20 years of service. She was a dedicated member of the Geneva County Republican Party and was very involved in political issues throughout the county. Samson First Baptist Church was blessed to have had her as a member of their church for many years, including teaching Sunday school and as a choir member.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Junior Merritt; granddaughter, Heather Dwan Knight; great-grandson, JT Jackson; sister, Eileen “Sister” Creel; and one brother.


She is survived by her six children: Cathy Merritt Edison (Huggy), John Alan Merritt, Lisa M. Peacock (James), Amy M. Pickron (Chris), Sherry M. Davis (Ed), and Tanya Merritt all of Samson, AL; 17 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Hayward Grimes (Louise) of Wicksburg, AL, Carrol Grimes (Sara) of Abbeville, AL, Rayford Grimes (Martha) of Samson, AL, and Roy Grimes (Cathy) of Goodman, AL; and several nieces and nephews.
